It is a well-known fact that trees, which are carbon sinks, play an important role in mitigating climate change. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen through the process of photosynthesis, a chemical process that allows green plants to create food for themselves.
Living in New York, we experience four distinct seasons each year. I wonder if we could find more ways to absorb carbon, particularly during the winter when many trees reduce or even stop photosynthesis which allows more carbon dioxide to be emitted from burning fossil fuels. As the first step, after doing some research together with my parents I decided to plant Leyland Cypress and Green Giant trees in our backyard this April. We also planted a river birch trees in our front yard, where the ground is always wet. We still saved some spots for Silver Maple and Red Mulberry trees, which are good CO2 absorbers according to getreprint.com.
Think globally and act locally. I am starting in my neighborhood to grow more happy trees so they can absorb more carbon dioxide.
